PRESENTS THE 10th ANNUAL “DAY OF BLACK DOCS”

SATURDAY, MAY 21, 2016 AT THE AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE

(LOS ANGELES, CA – April 25, 2016) – – The Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers West (BADWest) is excited to present its 10th annual “Day of Black Docs” on Saturday, May 21, 2016, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the American Film Institute (AFI) Mark Goodson Theater, 2021 N. Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027. Four incredible films will be screened (three feature documentaries and one short).

Tickets are $15.00 for the entire day’s event and can be purchased in advance at www.dayofblackdocs.org. Seating for all screenings is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended. Free parking is available in the AFI parking lot.

Frank Dawson and Abby Ginzberg’s AGENTS OF CHANGE, winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Pan African Film Festival, covers the turbulent college student activism of the 1970’s.

ALICE WALKER: BEAUTY IN TRUTH by Pratibha Parmar, is a revealing portrait of the author who was the first African American woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize.

Damon Kwame Mason’s SOUL ON ICE: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, winner of the People’s Choice Awards at the Edmonton International Film Festival, shares the inspiring, little known history of black players in hockey.

Jacquil Constant’s HAITI IS A NATION OF ARTISTS, focusing on contemporary artists from the island nation, and Robin Daniels’ EVERY VOTE COUNTS, on the significance of our current election cycle, complete the day.

Following the screenings, a discussion of the films will be conducted with the filmmakers on a panel moderated by Aminah Bakeer Abdul-Jabbar, Professor of Pan African Studies.

Q&A panelists include: Director/Producer Frank Dawson; Director Damon Kwame Mason; and Director/Producer Jacquil Constant.

“We are particularly excited to celebrate our 10th anniversary and to have as our moderator, Aminah Bakeer Abdul-Jabbar, Professor of Pan African Studies at Cal State Los Angeles” states David Massey, Co-Chair of BADWest.

Professor Aminah Bakeer Abdul-Jabbaar is originally from South Central LA. Ms. Abdul-Jabbar has a B.A. from USC in Cinema Television with an emphasis in Critical Studies and holds an M.F.A. from UCLA in Film, TV Production and Directing.

Formed in 2003, BADWest is a collective of documentary filmmakers of African descent that advocate the recognition and professional advancement of Black documentary filmmakers. Since its inception BADWest has provided developing and professional filmmakers with presentations and workshops, and this DAY OF BLACK DOCS represents ten years of screening prize-winning films from prominent documentary filmmakers.

Day of Black Docs is co-sponsored by the International Documentary Association (IDA), the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA), Momentous Insurance Brokerage and Wells Fargo Bank.

All day admission to the 10th Annual Day of Black Docs screening is $15.00. Tickets are available online at www.dayofblackdocs.org, and can also be purchased at AFI on the day of the event.
