Grammy-nominated Kim Richmond has been around for many years playing with the likes of Stan Kenton (1967), Clare Fischer (1968), Louie Bellson (1969-72), Lalo Schifrin(1979), Bob Florence (1979), Les Brown (1989), Bill Holman (1990), Vinny Golia(1991), Johnny Mandel, Chris Walden and Clay Jenkins among many others.Richmond also arranged professionally for many years for Schifrin, Buddy Rich, and Ernie Watts, among others. Richmond, composer/arranger/saxophonist, formed his 24-piece Concert Jazz Orchestra to provide a workshop for major concert works that include elements of both large ensemble jazz with free-swinging improvisation and symphonic colors and textures. This is a large jazz(orchestra) ensemble with expanded instrumentation contributing to the symphonic nature of the group…by definition, an authentic large jazz ensemble. The expanded instrumentation that contributes to the symphonic nature of the orchestra includes 5 woodwinds playing saxophones, flutes, clarinets and double reeds (oboe, English horn and bassoon); 4 trumpets; 2 French horns; 3 tenor trombones, bass trombone and tuba; and a rhythm section of guitar, piano, bass, drums, mallet percussion and Latin percussion. Stan Kenton maintained his orchestra by inventing new directions in music. While keeping an active road band, he also founded the Los Angeles Neophonic Orchestra in 1964. Led by Stan, the Neophonic Orchestra consisted of the top jazz and studio players and its mission was to perform new and innovative works. The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra shares this mission. Kenton was not only a monumental icon in jazz and modern music, but also in jazz education. This tribute continues his message by presenting works that the orchestra thought he would have encouraged, enjoyed and endorsed. Susan D. Gordon Public Relations 310.871.0621
